A Jharokha is a type of overhanging balcony space, typical of the architecture of western India (Gujarat & Rajasthan). The word Jarokha comes from the Hindi word ‘Jhankna’ which means to peek, or to see without being seen. The Jharokha served as a space for women and others from the royal family (mostly belonging to the royal family) to watch street processions without being seen by people on the street. Culturally, it was believed that revealing their faces to strangers threatened their modesty. The Jharokha was not only a window, but also a private, secure space that allowed them to connect to outdoor activities.

As a response to the hot & dry climate of western India, the Jharokhas were typically small shaded spaces (max 2m x 0.5m), the width of which mostly comprised of a seat for viewing. Many a time, Jharokhas were covered with a porous screen (a Jali) to protect from direct sunlight and hot, gusty winds.
